September 2006 « Chantix News HomeMore Data Indicating ChantixT is Effective and
Safe According to an article published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, more evidence indicates that Chantix™ (varenicline) is effective and safe when used to help smokers quit smoking. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimate that 44.5 million people in the U.S. are smokers, and approximately 8.6 million of these individuals currently have a chronic disease that is directly related to smoking. Smoking cessation is a critical part of improving the health of these individuals. Chantix is a medication that binds to and partially activates nicotine receptors in the brain. This partial activity reduces nicotine withdrawal symptoms. In addition, because Chantix blocks nicotine from binding to its receptors, use of Chantix may diminish the pleasure derived from smoking. These effects may make it easier for smokers to quit. Researchers from several institutions in the U.S. recently conducted another study to further evaluate the effectiveness Chantix in smokers. This trial included healthy individuals who were smokers. Participants were treated with different doses of Chantix or placebo (inactive substitute).
The researchers concluded that Chantix continues to demonstrate effectiveness and tolerability in individuals who wish to quit smoking when compared to placebo. Smokers who are interested in quitting may wish to speak with their physician about their individual risks and benefits of Chantix. Source: http://patient.cancerconsultants.com |
