Teacher Pleads No Contest Charge For Prescribing Chantix To Student

June 27, 2009

A Caseville High School teacher has pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of giving a prescription drug to a student. Deborah Gleissner entered the plea Monday in Huron County District Court. She must appear for sentencing Monday, July 13.

Gleissner, who teaches English, reportedly gave a Chantix pill to a student in June 2008. The stop-smoking aid requires a prescription to obtain but is not a controlled substance. A no contest plea means the defendant accepts punishment without admitting guilt. Gleissner, who is on paid leave, faces up to 90 days in jail and a $500 fine. The student no longer attends classes at Caseville.
