Chantix vs Zyban
Chantix (Varenicline) and Zyban (Bupropion) are the two popular prescription drugs which help the adults to get rid of smoking routine. Chantix is a smoking cessation medication developed by Pfizer which helps reduce nicotine craving and withdrawal effects in smokers whereas Zyban, manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline has been approved as an antidepressant which mainly treat a condition called major depressive disorder. It has been approved as an aid to patients who want to quit smoking by FDA in 1997. Though both drugs are approved for the same cause but the two drugs vary from each other in many ways. Chantix acts at sites in the brain that are by nicotine and may help those who want to quit smoking whereas Zyban is discovered to act as a smoking cessation later in 1997 and till date scientists are not yet able to be discovered its smoking cessation mechanism. According to two new studies, Chantix is much better than Zyban and it was also shown to be almost three times as effective as a placebo. Chantix 1 MG twice daily dose is most effective compared to any other smoke cessation medicine whereas Zyban 150 MG twice daily dose acts better than placebo but less effective compared to Chantix. "Smoking-cessation rates improved with higher doses of the drug." According to the two new studies published in the Aug.14/28 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine. They were done by researchers at multiple centers in the U.S. The Chantix courses were for six weeks, plus an additional week of placebo. The Zyban and placebo courses were for seven weeks.
