Chantix Cure for Smoking Cessation

27 June 2007

Smoking now has become a status symbol in all age groups. Smoking is not only the habit of a person from birth but various factors lead to it. Some important factors which play an important role in nicotine addiction are biological, psychological, behavioral and cultural factors. Among the population of America nearly, quarter of adults smoke.

Every body is aware about side effects and health problems related to smoking but they do not quit smoking. It has been observed that most of the people want to quit smoking but for them it gets very difficult. Most of the people quit smoking at a particular time and after a gap of years again start smoking. It is really very difficult to quit smoking because it is addictive as heroin. In fact, nicotine has actions similar to cocaine and heroin in the same area of the brain.
The three major areas responsible for inability to quit smoking are:

1) Mental Performance: It has seen that nicotine improves concentration and thinking ability and stopping smoking impairs it.

2) Stress: Smoking may or may not reduce stress but stopping certainly increases it.

3) Weight Gain: 5-10 pounds of weight gain has been observed in people who quit smoking.

Quitting smoking is not very difficult if a person has strong will power and determination. No drug is going to work until you have not prepared yourself for quitting smoking.

A new drug by the name of Chantix, a smoking cessation drug has been introduced by Pfizer. Chantix has the ability to partially activate nicotine receptors in the brain. Nicotine receptors reduces craving for nicotine when they quit smoking.

Chantix is mostly prescribed for 12 weeks and after completing this course for 12 weeks a person quits smoking. There are some cases that need Chantix for more than 12 weeks but it is recommended by a doctor only. Patient should not increase time period themselves.
